Well i cannot believe that after a YEAR of having tickets to Hamlet that it has now been & gone!! Today feels abit flat i think after the excitement of the past few days.
We arrived in Stratford on Sunday afternoon. Checked into our hotel (well B & B anyway) & then went off to explore. We walked through the town (where i stored the locations of relevent stores for the next days shopping trip) & along to the canal. I didn't take many photos of here (those i did can be seen on my photo blog) as with the work being done on the old Theatre it was difficult to take decent shots without cranes etc in them somewhere!! The weather was lovely & it was great strolling along, ice cream in hand & finally relaxing after the past few weeks of illness!
We then took the "foot ferry" across the river to the other side & walked up to the Courtyard Theatre. There we had a quick look around (found Stage door of course very easily) then sat & had a cup of tea in the Theatre cafe. Up til this point i wasn't too excited. At the theatre, just a day to go the buzz was beginning!!
After a while we headed back to the hotel to get ready for going out to dinner. We ate at Pizza Express. Normally my favourite place but although the food was nice enough , i was dissappointed that my favourite meal from there was not on the menu! Still, worse things could be wrong.
That was pretty much Sunday.
Next morning i was really excited. Not only by the fact that i would be seeing Hamlet that evening but also by knowing i was about to be allowed to go shopping too!!
I spent a fortune around the shops , as did Rob. It was nice to see Rob actually buying for himself as he doesn't very often.
We had a mid afternoon meal as i didn't want to eat too soon before the performance.
We got to the theatre about 6pm & had til the show started at 7:30 to wait til. We again had a drink etc in the cafe at the theatre. Then at 6:30 we made our way into the theatre & upstairs as our tickets were for the circle (some of the best seats in the house too according to the RSC website.)
Doors opened at about 6:45 & show began at 7:15. I have never , in all the years i have been going to the theatre or any show sat so far forward in my seat!! Mind you i had noone behind me at all so i wouldn't have been in anyones way. So when David makes his first entrance i really was transfixed. Trying to watch the actual play aswell as watching the object of my crush so close was not the easiest thing to be able to do.
We really enjoyed the play. Even Rob who i actually though would hate it! Not only was David just fantastic but so were the rest of the company. I have never seen Shakespeare on stage so i have nothing to compare too but i would probably say that David interpretation was one of the best still. There were plenty of squee moments of course, even if i did have to do so quietly! Not easy for a fangirl!
I don't want to say much as i wouldn't want to give anything away to those that haven't seen it but the bits that stick in my mind are BARE FEET & that rather obscene word! I shall so no more than that!
So as soon as the performance ended & i had clapped my hands raw we made a dash along with others to the stage door. My stomach did drop when i saw how many already there & said to Rob i probably wouldn't get anywhere near him or even see him because being a short arse i can't see over peoples heads! However suddenly a spot opened up near to where he starts the signings & although i wasn't at the front, i was as good as with a great view for when he finally came out (which was literally moments later!!) He signed my programme & i said "great performance" or something similar anyway. I was too excited to take a proper note! He replied (with eye contact) thank you very much. This would have had me floored i think if the crowd hadn't been squashing me keeping me upright :P! Rob was busy taking pics for me bless him. Good they are too considering that there was noway he could keep the camera straight with the crowd jostling.
All to soon it was over & he went back in. I really was so happy to get that moment , however brief it was. Really finished a great day off for me.
Piccies below:)
We also saw Ian Botham, the cricketer as he was starting off part of his walk from the high street. Amazing what you get to see sometimes!!
We did go back to the theatre that night to wait back stage door but they didn't do a signing that night. Oh well.
Then yesterday it was time to come home. We came straight home as the weather wasn't too great & we couldn't decide what to do.
